An Introduction to Qingdao University

Qingdao University is situated in the eastern coastal city of Qingdao, China, in a beautiful setting on the coast of the Yellow Sea with Mount Fushan in the background. Founded in 1924, it has become a well-established university. In 1993, Qingdao University became even more versatile when it was merged with three other major universities. The rich local culture blended with the spirit of the times and the favorable support from the Shandong Provincial Government enabled Qingdao University to develop into a new type of comprehensive university. It has a wide range of disciplines and is accredited to grant Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate degrees.

Under the leadership and with the support of governments at all levels, Qingdao University has developed into a large-scale and well-managed comprehensive university with a good teaching staff, a complete range of disciplines, having high prestige among similar domestic universities. With 24 colleges, Qingdao University encompasses 73 undergraduate programs covering such disciplines as liberal arts, history, law, economics, management, sciences, engineering, medicine, and education. The graduate school is composed of six doctoral programs, 60 master’s programs with 20 provincial key disciplines and laboratories, and three provincial engineering and technological research centers. Currently the enrollment totals over 30,000 students, of whom over 1,200 are postgraduates, nearly 600 are overseas students, and over 16,000 are students from continuing education. Of the 1,700 teachers employed, nine are academicians: one from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, two from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and six having external posts. The beautiful campus of Qingdao University occupies an area of over 2,560 mu (about 171 hectares) and a floor area of 900,000 square meters. Its library, the largest in terms of floor area in Shandong Province, houses over 3,000,000 copies of books and over 4,700 periodicals. The university has advanced teaching facilities and an effective campus network.
